Happy New Year

The Turtles were fully enjoying there New years Eve party, there was pizza for all and plenty of Jack Daniel's,  times were joyous.
By 11 O'clock Splinter had taken the knock and was put to bed and April was wasted and one of her boobs had already popped out of her revealing dress! (one of the Turtles was getting laid tonight...maybe all of them!)

Then, just before the New Year was upon them, there came a knock at the door...

There covered in sick, stinking of fags and swaying about like a canoe on a stormy sea, was Shredder. It being the night of good will to all men, Leonardo tried to politely usher him on his was, telling him Krang was down the road at some top party, that was full of fit girls.

But, feeling hard as fuck, Shredder was having none of it and burst into there private party and offered all the Turtles to a scrap!

Happy New Year:

Temperature values (Doc Savage)

These are my thumbnails for my next image (Doc Savage) I could have done a load more of these, but to be honest I would have been wasting my time, as I know roughy what I want. Doing this little exercise is great fun and really helpful. A big thank you goes out to the Jedi Master's over at Muddy Colors, for showing me this process. That Blog is a must for anyone wanting to become a better artist!

He'll Save Everyone of Us (apparently)

Flash Gordon. The first picture from a series of work, that I'm calling...Get Serious With Yourself Lee.
Set myself a limited palette with this one. 16 colours for Flash (warm) and 16 for Ming (cold), which for me, is very strict. Though it definitely makes for a better balanced image (I just gotta stick to it now)
Cheers.

ADVENTURES IN PENCIL (whilst sat in work)

Haven't used a pencil in a long, long time. So with working a few extra hours this week, I've been scribbling (literally) away whilst sitting there. Here is a bunch of them scribbles, with a quick lick of P.S over the top of them. Thanks for looking.

Never really thought of giving a Ork 4arms before, till now that is .

(ORK/TROLL thingymajig!)

(some sort of knight/ Brian Blessed type warrior: Let's call him Hammer Raven)

WOLFCHILD:
I've been playing a load of Amiga games recently and although looking back, it wasn't exactly brilliant. At 12 of age, it fucking rocked!!! Hence my 80's inspired soft rocker inspired fan-art! :)

Something in-between book illustrating!

This needs cropping down, but I'll do it at a later date. Just some fun, well not for Spidey he's getting soaked.

Book Illustration (Princess Bride part1)

Ok, the first book to go under the pencil, is the Princess Bride. Like I said in the last post, of the 3book covers that I intend to do, this is the only one I haven't read (yet) Therefore my inspiration and thoughts will mainly come from the film and my imagination.

From the offset I knew I wanted to cram as many of the stories great characters into this cover as possible. I know your suppose to do loads of variations when designing something like a cover, scrutinize them, see which is readable and so forth. But, I also think that when an image comes to the forefront of your mind, kicking and screaming. You should have the intuition and self confidence just to snatch it right out from the aether and get to work!

This thumbnail was one of those rare occasions when you get something first time of asking!

From this stage I did a few very quick and rough character designs and once happy with them, I turned on the computer, loaded up Manga studio and started turning this thumbnail into a workable composition.

From here things will get scaled and shifted about a bit, before I go into inking. One of the problems that I think I'll encounter as I get further down the line with piece, is with the colouring stage. I want to add paint fades in a lot of different areas and because of the way I ink and the way I colour...I can see a lot of head scratching on the horizon!

Book Illustration.

In the next month or so, I'd like to approach a few Illustration Agencies about taking me on. But, looking over my Portfolio it's clear to me that there isn't enough serious (book) illustration work on there. So, between now and whenever I'm brave enough to contact an agency? :) I'm going to do a couple of book covers.

At this stage I'm planning on doing 3 and I'm think that they will be The Princess Bride, The Hobbit and The Northern Lights. As I go through these pieces, I'm going to try and show a bit of my working process and share any problems that I've faced (after all, I think thats what a blog should be about)

Please feel free to leave any comments or post any views on what you like and don't like.

As I'm setting myself this brief, I'm going to keep the focus and goal of each piece very simple.

Would these cover's, make the younger me (9-12ish) want to pick up these books?

(*with the Princess Bride, I'm going from my experience with the film. As it's the only book stated, that I haven't read...yet!)

HUNTING

One of those stupid pieces where you challenge yourself to use a limited palette and to not make the image seem to painted! It would have been easier to just go and paint the thing proper from the start.

Lil Red Samurai (Print)

Last bit of scribbling before I head back to work on this Comic. Cheers

More Star Wars...same friend

I'm going for a lot more mystery and movement within my shadows. I hope that shows?

The Amazing Spiderman (movie fan-art)

Watched The Amazing Spiderman last night at the flicks. And I must confess I grinned like an idiot all the way through the film, which is usually a sign that I enjoyed it. Below is a piece of fan-art from the movie. I thought Andrew Garfield was great casting choice, hence this piece that I managed to squeeze in at the tail end of work, today. Below that is a little piece (not film related) that I was playing about with last week. I may get this printed on a plain white T-shirt as I think it will work well...I think!

Thanks for looking.

There and back again...

Ok, about 4hours ago, this image just decided to pop into my head. Normally I put these kind of things on the back burner. But, this wouldn't go away. So, here it is...

There and back again!

The Shadow (roof riding)

Tried to do this piece with the mind set I had when I was about 10, mixed with some of the experience that I have at 32!  Wether I got there or not, I don't mind as it was fun all the way through.

Because Pants Don't Expand (that much)

Because pants don't expand that much... A flaw I've often realised when seeing Hulk movies. But now I realise why they let that element slide!

Darth Robbery (true tale!!! sort of)

I've been using fountain pen's of late for inking. Being new to these old school weapons, I needed something to practise on. That's when I was shown this bizarre event!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/27/darth-vader-robs-bank-flees-on-bike_n_1548908.html

So, with a little twist and a load of ink bleeds, pen stoppages and four different ink trials! Here is my little take on events. Thanks for looking.

The Shadow (quick sketch)

Little quick sketch of the Shadow. Did it to help finish off a dying brush pen (R.I.P) Taken on I-Phone with Instagram. Liking this Instagram, very handy for sketch book work.

Fountain Pen (testing)

Having spent the last few months using Sable Brushes and Brush pens. I'm now trying out a Namiki Falcon fountain pen and apart from finding the right type of ink, I have love using pen. I think it has also confirmed for me that I am a pen man. I have loved using a brush and there is a real magic that happens when you use one. But, using a flex nib, just makes me feel that my art work is being expressed in a more honest manor. I will still be using a brush within my work, but it will not be the main stay of it.

This particular image was done with the Namiki. It's only a few centimeters high and it was a little difficult using a medium nib at such a small size. So, I can see my credit card taking the hit for the purchase of an extra fine nib...(brace yourself Mr Credit Card)

Death Touch (3-page quick comic)

Something I did a while ago and only just got around to actually finishing. Never used Photoshop before for font work and if I'm to do so in the future...I need to get hold off some decent looking font's, as this font here is awful. Anyway, a bit of stupid fun, with a lame joke thrown in for good measure.

Lobster Johnson (the first reich is the deepest)

Fan Art piece. Finally got myself an A3 scanner that works (fingers crossed) Inked this ages ago, but to wait for the scanner to arrive, before Mr Photoshop could have play. Hope you dig.

Storm (fan art sketch with a wee' splash of P.S)

Came across a video on Facebook showing Don Lawrence working on a title (that I didn't know about) called, Storm. This guy's work was right up there. But, it was the premise of the book that got me! It got me that bad, that a quick trip to the Amazon was up taken and the book is now on order!

Sunday dinnertime sketch, with a splash of Monday mornin' Photoshop!

Monk Sketch (drawing guild)

Done for my friend's over at the Drawing Guild. Brief, draw a person of Chinese nationality...it had to be a monk, didn't it! (20mins)

Batman (coloured)

Not what I originally planned for this, but just went on instinct and the fun factor!

Revised version: Wanted it to match the earlier Captain America post. Hopefully this version does that.
